Michael Jones, better known by his stage name Wax, is an American musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. He became a YouTube star after uploading several videos of himself rapping and singing. Now, he has released a new album and is touring across America. The tour is called The Cookout Chronicles, a 48 location tour that stopped by New Mexico!
The venue was the El Rey, and I was able to attend. This was my first time at the El Rey, and it was a bigger venue than I expected. Sadly, the crowd wasn’t packed for Wax. But I was able to get into the front of the crowd without bothering anyone!
There were 3 opening acts. The first two were local artists, and I couldn’t seem to find out their names or information. I remember waiting for the rap artists to introduce themselves, too, and they did not. Even the flyer did not have the openers’ names! They did however, have The Palmer Squares, a rap duo who came on right before. They did amazing, and got the crowd excited for what was in store.
Wax came on at 10:00 p.m. and ended at 11:30 p.m. He played a variety of his songs, but mainly played from his new album, Cookout Chronicles. My favorite part was when Wax busted out his car, had a giant forest backdrop, and played a light cricket sound in the background, and told the crowd to imagine we were around a campfire. He then played acoustic renditions of his songs and brought out a fog machine in the shape of a grill. It was a super cool thing to watch. Wax ended up doing a 2 song encore because everyone on the floor got super excited. He even came down to the crowd and sang with everyone!!
Wax did an amazing job, and I even got to meet him afterwards. Safe to say, I am glad I got to see him come to little old New Mexico and play!
