Last Sunday a group of my friends and I went to Jemez and hiked some very high mountains. At first I was so excited because I thought we weren’t going to do any crazy hiking and I thought we were going to stay on flat trails that were easy to get up and get back down. So we are all driving and I think to myself “When are we going to stop?”.
We keep driving up this mountain and then we finally stop and get out of our cars. I start looking for a path to take and I don’t quite see one. Then I look in front of me and there’s this massive and tall mountain. Then one of my friends says, “Let’s go, we are climbing up that mountain.” I instantly got filled with fear and kept thinking to myself, “I can’t do this.” My friends started to climb the mountain so I get the courage to climb it while thinking about how with one mistake I could go tumbling down the mountain. So then my friends and I start encouraging and cheering each other on all the way to the top.
When we got to the top we all gave each other a big hug and said, “We did it!” After that hike we felt like we could do anything and we were so proud of ourselves for continuing to climb the mountain. It could have been so easy to let fear hold us back from conquering the mountain but, instead we pushed the fear back and accomplished what we wanted to do which was to get to the top of the mountain, no matter how hard or how scary it would be.
Fear can not only keep you from climbing a mountain but, fear can hold you back from accomplishing so much in life. It’s said that there are only two fears that we are born with: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. The rest of our fears are learned. So why let your fear have control over the choices you makes, the risk you take, or accomplishing your dreams. You have a passion, pursue it with everything you have and don’t allow people to discourage you from doing what you are called to do.
Sometimes we can be so consumed by fear that we miss out on opportunities and then look back and say I should have done this, I could have done this, if only I would have done that. When we do that, we miss out on the now. Instead of saying those things, do what you can now.Go after your passions and take risks. It’s never to late to start but, you can’t let fear get in the way or hold you back. Keep going and conquer each day, you never know where life can take you when you don’t allow fear to consume you.
