Did going to college help to broaden your horizons in any way?
Definitely. I was raised in a very religious, conservative family, and though I didn’t share many of the views of my family, I didn’t feel that I had the opportunity or support to voice my own opinions about things. Coming to college, especially to a large, secular university, was the best decision I have ever made, because it gave me that opportunity to find my own truth. The incredible variety of opinion and belief that I encountered at UNM was thrilling and it challenged so many of my own thoughts and opinions. I have always been open minded, but I believe I am now more grounded in my personal opinions and beliefs that I ever was, and that is priceless to me.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when entering UNM?
I wish I knew that no matter how hard it is to put myself out there and make friends, it is probably the single most important thing I could have done as a freshman that would have decreased my stress, made me feel less lonely, and made me understand that there are people out there who care about me as a person.

What do you want to accomplish before leaving UNM?
What I really want to do is be there for a freshman and encourage them to reach out now, rather than isolate themselves. I want to share my experience with another person who is struggling and let them know that I was there too, and that they can learn from my mistakes. I want to make someone else’s college experience start out on a strong foot – and I can do that by sharing my story.

What are your plans after college?
I want to go to grad school. I’m preparing to apply for MFA and possible MA programs. I’m hoping I’ll land a funded position and be able to teach writing while earning my master’s degree. And after that…I just want to be as involved in the arts as I can possibly be.

Hi, friends. This is my last post on The Pack. It’s such a bittersweet moment to wrap up a year and a half of writing for this amazing blog. As you know from my last posts, a lot of things have been up in the air lately. My bachelors degree has been completed since May, but […]

I’m super excited to share that I’ve been accepted as a freelance writer for ABQ NewsCastic! I’m eager to expand my skills writing about local events in Albuquerque. The thing about freelancing is that it’s easy to take the first step, which is expressing interest and applying to a news source. Most news sources are […]

Farewell, Summer

Well, the summer is just about over. This last week has just felt different somehow. Things are changing and shifting – the weather (and my mood along with it), and the general rhythm of life. The on-and-off rain has been so beautiful and calming but also sad. Fall is around the corner, and while it’s […]

Next Steps

I feel like the biggest theme of this summer has been one of searching. I’ve been searching for a stable, off-campus job, searching for meaning in a very transient phase of life, searching for a clue about what to do with my life after graduation. I’ve had a lot of great advice from friends and […]
